May is done .... look out June .. Training Update

So after a slow April running / training wise May ended up being a decent month. Most of the month was spent racing while still trying to get in some decent quality training miles. This was no small feat as I often probably didn't take enough time for recovery so there were more then a few runs done on very tired legs. No complaining allowed tho as I had a fun racing.

In June I will be more focused on continuing to build up my base miles. That means less racing although I reserve the right to change my mind at any moment. The currently plan for June will be to run one maybe two 5ks starting with the Runway Run on June 13th (Watch out for the McPeake VS Blackburn rematch, crying will not be tolerated).

Although a busy month of racing I was still able to get my weekly base back up to 50 miles. My hope is to get it up to 70 by the end of June. Long runs should be back up to 20 milers next week. Still yet to decide what marathon I will be doing in the fall. That decision will really depend on how my training is going and whether I take on the challenge of running a 50k.

Currently running week consists of a long run, 2 trail runs, mid week longer run (tempo starting this week), a recovery run on roads and of course the always popular track work out (speed work). Crosstraining at this point is 2 or 3 weight workouts a week for upper body and core.

Oh ya here is a photo of our new kitty. She is keeping us busy.

  1. That sounds like a good plan for June. I know I need a month every so often where I don't run more than one race or else I have a tough time getting into any kind of consistant buildup.

  3. I'm in the middle of a ten-week period with 9 races. I definitely need to get back into training mode once I'm done with it. I hadn't considered how it might affect the quality of training runs. Live and learn...

Sounds like a great plan you have going for June. I am so impressed with your mileage!

  4. Great Plan. Thanks for the comment re. races. Hamilton is still in the running though I am not a real fan of a point to point race but it is local so I will keep it in mind.

  5. Hmmm, cute kit!

And thanks for the comment on my blog. Like the author I am also a marathon never-ran and am training to run the waterfront in September. Given that I've been through too many aches and pains to mention I thought perhaps scaling things back a bit might be worth thinking about. Though I agree with your assessment that the author's evidence is anecdotal at best. It looks like you are quite an accomplished runner and perhaps once I'm at that level my body won't need the potentially theraputic benefits of walking breaks. That being said, I am loath to walk when I am training for running, so we'll see how it goes.

    Cheers!

  7. well coming from a serious trail runner, i'll take your word! we'll see :) after saturday, depending how it goes, i'm thinking of doing a 25K trail at table rock (ozarks) missouri.

and cute cat! i have two myself. and thanks for stopping by my blog! i'm gonna follow now to learn about this whole trail thing, except there aren't many trails here in wichita, and what we have aren't 'hard core' at all! haha.

  8. That's an enviable training schedule you have. I've yet to reach 50 miles, although I had hoped to for this marathon training. I just can't bring myself to run 5 or 6 days a week although I'm sure I'll wish I had during the marathon.

Cute kitten. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  13. Thanks for the comment on my blog. Your training schedule blows my mind, but I'm guessing I'll have to get there if I want to run seriously in the future. I'm sure I'll also be checking out some trail runs too... sound like the type of run I'd enjoy and I live right at the Escarpment so I should have some trails in the 'hood.

  16. Sounds like you have a solid plan for success.

That is cool you have a 50k in your sights. They are a lot of fun and as long as it is on the trails there really isnt much recovery.

  20. Thanks for stopping by my blog :) Looks like you have a really great plan for June--I love that you are looking to fit quite a variety of runs in. I think that definitely helps when trying to hit higher mileage. And can I just say that I would KILL for some trail runs? Alas NYC doesn't offer much in the trail department . . .

Oh, and very cute kitty! She looks so sweet!
